Review: The Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah, IA

The Perfect Location

The Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah, Iowa is a charming and historic hotel that offers a unique, comfortable, Midwest experience. The hotel was constructed in 1905 and is located in the heart of downtown Decorah, within walking distance of local shops, restaurants, breweries, and the beautiful Upper Iowa River.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly staff person and a warm, inviting lobby that feels steeped in history. The hotel’s historic charm is immediately evident, with original hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and vintage furnishings. Make sure you take a few moments to stand in the center of the three-story octagonal open lobby and gawk at the gorgeous stained glass, thick wooden banisters, grand wingback chairs, and ornate floors. The lobby practically invites you to loiter.

The Room

The rooms at the Hotel Winneshiek are spacious and well-appointed, with comfortable beds, high-quality linens, and plenty of natural light. Each room is unique, with its own style and character. Our room was massive, with gorgeous antique furniture, magnificent stained glass windows that let in tons of light, and a black and white checkered bathroom large enough to skate in.

An excellent feature of the Hotel Winneshiek is the Hotel Winn Bar. It’s dark wood, low light, and cozy booths are perfect for a pre or post-meal cocktail or beer. And, of course, they serve the best brews from the local breweries, Pulpit Rock, Toppling Goliath, and PIVO.

Local Cafes and Restaurants

In addition to the bar, the hotel also offers a fitness center, business center, and meeting rooms, making it an ideal choice for both casual and business travelers. If you need a pick-me-up, you can walk out of the hotel’s front doors and be mere steps from a perfectly crafted cup at Impact Coffee or a hot slice from Mabe’s Pizza next door. If you’re in the mood for an unforgettable dinner, try Rubaiyat, a restaurant focused on using local ingredients to craft new and exciting American comfort foods. There’s no way you are going hungry in Decorah!

Tip: At Rubaiyat, try the Apple Crisp Danish Brie appetizer!

Overall, the Hotel Winneshiek is a gem in the heart of Decorah. Its historic charm, modern amenities, and convenient location make it an ideal choice for anyone visiting the area. Whether you’re in town for a weekend getaway, a fun run, brewery tour, or a business trip, the Hotel Winneshiek is sure to provide a comfortable and memorable experience.
